So, I was listening to David Koechner (SNL, Anchorman, Talladega Nights) on the “You Made it Weird with Pete Holmes” podcast, and he discussed what it’s like being the father of 5 kids. And, for someone who is so hilarious, he really had some deep thoughts about parenting:
“Eckhart Tolle said ‘You don’t own your children. They’re not yours.’ Which is true. They’re not mine. They happen to be in my care, but I don’t own them. It is another life for which I have responsibility. It’s another human being that I can fill up with horrible ideas … or good ones.
“That’s the main philosophy. Another is, ‘The foundation of ethics is listening.’ If you can apply that to parenting, you get two things. One of those is ethics. The second is listening. Listening is hard. Being a good person around them is hard. Not getting angry or not bringing the same level of anger that they bring – that’s hard.
“The other good quote I read that applies to our careers, as well as parenting, is from Michelangelo, and it is ‘Genius is eternal patience.’ What does it take to be genius? It takes eternal patience. Think about what Michelangelo did for his vocation – it would take an amazing amount of patience for sculpting and painting. You have to be patient with yourself.”
So then the conversation between the two men continues into discussions of comedy and doing impressions. And then Koechner, the same guy just eloquently waxed philosophical about parenting at the beginning of the show, says:
“I have my kids do Paul Lynde impressions at the dinner table.”
In case you, like me, didn’t know who Paul Lynde is, he was the center square on Hollywood Squares and he was also on Bewitched. This guy:

I just love the idea of Champ Kind and his five kids, of whom he doesn’t “own,” sitting around the dinner table eating spaghetti, and taking turns doing impressions of someone who didn’t even exist in their (i.e., the kids’) lifetimes. Perfect.
Koechner said he would Tweet a video of it to Holmes, so I’ll have to scroll his Twitter feed to see if I can find it (this podcast ep was taped in April). Will update if I find.

Happy Cuatro de Mayo! Tomorrow is Derby Day, Cinco de Mayo, and the first pool party of the year. Life is as grand as my giant straw hat that I will be sporting tomorrow.
On that note, here are some grand songs to check out this weekend while you’re out chugging tequilla and buying Pepto Bismol for the Seis de Mayo Hangover. Enjoy.

Seriously, this is awesome. Twitter is the best, no?
